Lerato Mbele is an international broadcaster, TV personality & media consultant with a passion for Africa and its's development.
She is the founder of “Moon Landing Media cc” a film production house and a communications strategy consultancy helping international clients understand Africa better and tell their African investment stories in a more effective manner.
Prior to starting this business Lerato Mbele has spent 9yrs working as a broadcaster for BBC World News, as a presenter and business news correspondent on the global platform. She hosted of the channels main Africa-focused business shows “Talking Business Africa”, “In Business Africa” and “Africa Business Report”, as well as hosting international documentaries such as “Follow the Food” that looked at the relationship Africa has with global tech and the global agricultural industries in China, India, Japan and the USA.
Prior to that Lerato Mbele was a senior anchor at CNBC Africa and also a prime time news anchor in her native South Africa for the country’s public broadcaster SABC 3.
Her experiences travelling and filming business stories across Sub Saharan Africa have seen her visit factory floors, farms, street markets and boardrooms, all of which have given her great insight into the “art of doing business” in complex African environments and other frontier economies.
Lerato is keen on hosting more leadership dialogues, which she believes help to create an understanding about the changing global economy and how that impacts Africa and developing nations in particular.
She works with many African commercial entities and financial institutions such as the Standard Bank Group, Sanlam Investments, FNB and Sasol, companies with a large pan African and emerging markets footprint.
Her international journalism has seen her interview global chief executives such as the Microsoft co-Founder Bill Gates, Virgin’s Richard Branson and Alphabet’s Sundar Pachai. She has held fireside chats with Nobel laureates Wole Soyinka, Muhammed Yunus, the late Kofi Annan & Wangari Maathai. She has moderated numerous plenaries at the World Bank, New Development Bank (BRICS), World Economic Forum, UNECA and AfDB. She has engaged development experts at the highest levels such as David Malpass, Jim Kim, Christine Lagarde and former WTO DGs. On the continent she has interviewed Heads of State and Prime Ministers.
Lerato Mbele is a Chevening Scholar with an MSc Development Studies from SOAS at the University of London. She was named a WEF Young Global Leader in 2014 by the World Economic Forum.
She has appeared on the power lists of the Oprah Magazine, NewAfrican Women, Leading Ladies in Africa, the Star Newspaper, the Mail & Guardian’s book “On the shoulders of giants” profiling the most influential women in South Africa and has ranked in the top 80 of RichTopia rankings of 200 most influential business journalists in the world. She was also a member of the board/council at the University of Cape Town.
