San Diego Convention Center 2.6-million-square-foot facility is located along the waterfront in downtown San Diego, steps from the bustling Gaslamp District.


Our Convention Center and our team are recognized as leaders in our industry and we have received the Venue of Excellence award from the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM).




The process of creating the Convention Center began with a major downtown redevelopment in the late 1970s that led to City voters approving a proposal to build the waterfront convention center in 1983. City Council created the San Diego Convention Center Corporation in 1984 to manage and operate the new facility upon completion. The Port of San Diego agreed to fund the entire project at a cost of $164 million with no debt service.


On November 21, 1989, the San Diego Convention Center opened for business after two and a half years of construction. The demand to book an event was so high, that the need for more space was soon apparent.


In 1998, City voters approved a proposition to expand the Convention Center by a 62 percent vote. In November 2001, the Phase II expansion nearly doubled the size of our building to allow for a greater amount and size of events.


In June 2016, we launched the largest series of upgrades in the building’s history after qualifying for funding from a California IBank loan. This funded eight capital projects including a total renovation of our iconic Sails Pavilion and modernization of escalators. More upgrades were funded by our own reserves, such as a building-wide LED light fixture conversion, restroom renovations, digital signage and new chairs.


Exhibit Hall
More than a half million sq. ft. of contiguous exhibit space divisible into seven separate halls.

Meeting Rooms
Featuring up to 72 meeting rooms located throughout the upper and mezzanine levels.

Two ideally located 40,000 sq. ft. ballrooms with spacious foyer areas.

Sails Pavilion
90,000 sq. ft. of column-free, glass-enclosed space which conveys an open air feeling while indoors.

Lobby & Amenities
With barrel-vaulted windows and easy access to the Gaslamp Quarter, our wide lobbies provide ample space for traffic flow and registration.

Outdoor Space
Expansive terraces overlook San Diego Bay, providing the waterfront views and year-round sunshine.

Guest Services

Our friendly Guest Services team is always ready to assist visitors. Located throughout the lobby, they greet attendees, provide directions, answer questions and manage traffic flow. We provide a complimentary number of Guest Services staff for events.

All Guest Services team members are happy to assist individuals with sensory needs.

We offer a wide range of indoor and outdoor dining experiences. Together with you, we can plan an intimate, sunset reception on one of our expansive waterfront terraces, a plated banquet in one of our ballrooms or a one-of-a-kind meal in our glowing Sails Pavilion.


Cleaning Services

As the exclusive in-house cleaning service, our staff takes great pride in maintaining an immaculate facility from top to bottom.

We use eco-friendly cleaning products and our cleaning staff is at the heart of our award-winning recycling program. Specific information about event cleaning can be found in our Regulations.

Exhibitors can conveniently pre-order booth cleaning, or request cleaning on-site at our exhibitor services desk.


Facility Security & Public Safety

We place the highest priority on safety and security during events.

Our experienced in-house security team is responsible for all public areas, facilitating dock entry and directing shuttle and vehicle traffic on the front drive. For leased space, we can provide a list of approved event security providers to assist you.


Union Labor Partners

We have long-term and productive relationships with local unions through a memorandum of understanding. Your Event Manager can provide details.
