Speaker Bio

Tyler Farnham speaks on topics such as overcoming adversity, leadership and getting out of the comfort zone as a Motivational Speaker. He is an Author of 2 books.

He was born and raised in cocoa beach Florida and is a lifelong surfer. His journey began as a lifeguard captain whilst studying to become an EMT or firefighter, sprinkle in a billabong model girlfriend, regular surfing combined with a passion for skydiving and it's fair to say life was looking good.

Wind in his sails he felt life could get no better, he was right.

Then life decided to give him a savage U turn.

Easter Sunday of 2009 Tyler took his mom skydiving for her very first time.

No one could have predicted how that day would turn out: A parachute malfunction, high speed collision back to earth, and a medically induced coma. Five days after the coma Tyler woke up on his 26th birthday with a new grim reality.

The compound fracture was so severe his right leg was nearly amputated, he snapped his femur, broke his upper and lower right arm, shattered both his condyles, fractured his mandible, broke nine teeth that had to be extracted, and fractured his skull. His body was completely destroyed.

His spirit however refused to be crushed.

Once being told his life may never get back to where it was, Tyler took action. Whilst sitting in a wheelchair with his mouth wired shut  he began journaling about each day in rehab, (writing with his off hand due to injuries)

After clearing the fog of a physically and emotionally strenuous rehab, Tyler fell victim to OxyContin dependency just as the love of his life decided to leave him.

Yet again, something inside refused to let him self destruct and after 11 months of physical rehabilitation, Tyler did the impossible- he started surfing again, regained his position as a ocean rescue captain saving lives and shockingly to some, started skydiving again.

His efforts as a captain saw him awarded a lifesaving valour award as well as lifeguard of the year.

In 2012 Tyler began training to be the best lifeguard he could be with the vision of international shores on his mind and the opportunity to continue his love of lifeguarding and surfing.

11 years have passed since Tyler left Florida and he has since traveled the world doing what he loves, surf coaching, lifeguarding and his newfound passion of speaking.

He speaks on topics such as overcoming adversity, leadership and getting out of the comfort zone. Find out more at my website

Tyler is a published author, with two titles to date and is currently in a managerial role at the internationally renowned Nihi Sumba resort.

We have known Tyler Farnham for about six years. Tyler was one of our best team leader instructors from 2009-2011 when he moved away. Tyler was a great volunteer and extremely well liked by the participants, their families and the other volunteers. He always handled himself with the utmost professionalism.

Even though the volunteers are not required to arrive until 8 am, Tyler was always one of the first ones to arrive and last ones to leave – willing to do anything we needed to have done. Any position that puts Tyler in a leadership role, we would highly recommend him. He is well spoken, well mannered, a team player and an extremely hard worker.

We were lucky enough for Tyler to visit our school in June 2018.Tyler delivered two presentations to a large cohort of secondary age students. Ours is a large comprehensive school located in Cornwall in the South West of the UK. Prior to the presentations Tyler was in close communication about the content of his presentation and how he would deliver it to our students.

On the day, Tyler delivered his presentation twice to separate groups of approximately 400 students. The students were fully engaged in Tyler’s story and it was a really motivational speech that he gave. Tyler’s style of delivery made it really accessible for students to understand his journey and they were greatly interested to hear about his accident and subsequent recovery. More importantly they found his positive attitude and determination to overcome this life changing event really inspirational. They asked lots of questions and were really interested in Tyler’s life and responded really well to his open approach. In fact, our student and staff couldn’t stop talking about it afterwards and how inspiring they had found it.

Tyler is a natural speaker; his story is one that resonates with both adults and children. Our students got a great deal out of hearing him speak as well as be able to begin to get some understanding of how people turn such a negative experience into a positive one.

Tyler addressed around 650 Year 10 students at a Mount Albert Grammar School assembly. His presentation captivated his audience with this key message of never giving up resonating strongly with the students. Tyler has a very personal, heartfelt yet humorous approach to his presentation which completely engaged student interest. Many students actually remained behind after the assembly to meet Tyler personally.

I would have no hesitation recommending Tyler in any capacity as a public speaker and would welcome the opportunity of him speaking at my school again. Adam Simpson , MT Albert Grammar School
