INVITING YOU INTO THE SHOES OF OTHERS
Cape Town, Western Cape
But in 2010, following an unorthodox project for an advertising client, Michael began telling stories. In 2011 Michael then stumbled upon the untold story of the 1937 Springbok rugby team: a group of men who lived in a fascinating time and whose legacy holds far more gravitas than which can be retained in a set of chalk lines. This story proved to be a success and he has told the story to audiences around the country to overwhelmingly positive reviews. By 2015, Michael had developed and told a number of original, non-fiction stories all of which drew inspiration from South Africa’s unique history. An interest which, having qualified as an accountant, Michael had then studied through UNISA. With these foundations laid, Michael Charton – Conference Speaker made the decision to embark on his most ambitious project to date. To write and tell a story which, while remaining true to the art of storytelling, manages to unearth the key dynamics of South African history in a manner which appeals to the heart. This story would prove to be a monumental challenge, which saw Michael Charton – Conference Dinner Speaker resign his role as a financial director and ply 18 months of his life researching and developing. The result was acclaimed story, MY FATHER’S COAT. A story which has found considerable acclaim and set Michael up to expand his project into a company called INHERIT SOUTH AFRICA, which aims, through a number of projects, to make South African history more accessible to both our people and visitors. PRESENTATIONS: MY FATHER’S COAT – Five Men and the Great Story of South Africa MY FATHER’S COAT is the realisation of Michael Charton’s decade-long ambition to make the incredible story, that is South African history, more accessible to our people. To open the hearts of South Africans to our past, so that we may use our remarkable story no longer as a tool to inspire hatred and fear and division, but rather as a source of unity and healing. Accordingly, Michael’s idea was to condense the epic narrative of South Africa into a bite-size story which is both compelling and balanced. A project which would prove to be a colossal, time-consuming challenge, but one which has ultimately given rise to a very unique product, providing order and meaning to a notoriously complex subject. But importantly, this is no history lecture. Instead, this is just a story. A human story, told by climbing into the boots of five prominent and directly interlinked protagonists spanning 200 turbulent years: Mzilikazi, Kruger, Rhodes, Smuts and Mandela. So, while historians actively try to eliminate the biases so prevalent in our story; Michael embraces them. And as Michael Charton – Conference Speaker introduces you to each of his five characters, he allows them to lure you under their spell by subtly endorsing their beliefs and biases. But, with the introduction of each subsequent character, new insights are carefully leaked into the narrative, undermining previous biases and providing a new depth of understanding; until a layered and more balanced view of our complex past is gradually revealed. Further, and because the lives of these characters overlapped, Michael Charton – Conference Dinner Speaker finds unique opportunities to tell the same pivotal moments in the story through more than one set of eyes; so providing a powerful reminder of our heavy biases as well as the absurdity of some of our historic attitudes. Those attitudes ultimately responsible for South Africa’s catastrophic 20th century. This was a project Michael believed in so strongly that he gave up his life as a chartered accountant in order to pursue it. This passion shines through in his delivery. Indeed, this is a unique life experience: An opportunity to reflect on our unique past and to celebrate the fascinating peoples with whom we all share this complex country. Never before has our past been explored in this manner. THE FIRST WORLD CHAMPIONS – The Untold Story of the Legendary 1937 Springboks Michael stumbled upon the quite remarkable story of the 1937 Springboks in an old Cape Town bookstore. And being both a rugby fan and a passionate historian, he was amazed that he had never heard about this story before. Inspired, Michael Charton – Conference Speaker proceeded to scour the photo albums and scrapbooks of these old Springboks over the next 18 months. A process which opened his eyes to a set of amazing anecdotes: their remarkable relationship with the Maori people; the Springbok’s last Zulu “Haka,” a young Jewish star who would later make his way into Hitler’s bunker; and the antics of a famous gentleman-thug: Boy Louw. Stories offering a rare glimpse into the beauty of the human spirit. Then, following a strange sequence of events, his obscure passion for this tour evolved into a talk, which Michael has subsequently delivered for select audiences around the country, to consistently outstanding feedback. The story weaves together a few of the key characters of this tour. It unlocks the context behind the special old rivalry between the All Blacks and the Springboks; it celebrates rugby’s amateur era together with its associated gentlemanly conduct; and it re-introduces to the world a group of men who sacrificed in both peace and war. This is a story where sportsmanship and value systems leap at you through its characters, reminding one, through an emotional sense of nostalgia, what is truly important in life and legacy.

How does a kid from a shanty town living in a tin and wrought iron house with no running water or electricity grow up to become a leading astrophysicist with over 60 international research papers on Einstein’s gravity, black holes and collapsing stars? He is one of South Africa’s most recognized astrophysicists having changed the mindset and attitudes of tens of thousands of school learners, educators and the general public through his spring-loaded shows and effervescent personality. How does one define GENIUS? Most people will equate Einstein with genius. Does having the ability to solve complex mathematical problems or excelling academically earn one the status of genius? What about our talented artists, musicians, poets, craftsman, teachers and entrepreneurs? We walk among amazing people with unbounded talent, vision and perception. The ability to think outside the box and to discard commonsense drives creativity and progress. Having the ability to say “YES” even if you are thinking “NO” is a major advantage in taking a leap of faith. We all have at the very least one special talent, be it carving a spoon out of a fallen tree branch or coming up with the next best thing after Facebook yet many never realise it. CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK AND YOU WILL CHANGE THE WORLD! Can you walk through an A5 page? Most people will say no. I will show you how this is possible. How many nails can you balance on the head of a single six-inch nail without using glue, magnets or holding them together? The pessimists amongst us will say none. The blinkered thinkers will say one. I say any number. I will open your mind to infinite possibilities through the power of speech, brilliantly constructed demonstrations and experiments. By changing the way you observe the physical universe, whetting your curiosity and by appealing to your latent youth we will unleash the GENIUS within YOU! From dunking marshmallows into liquid nitrogen (temperature of -1960C), launching methanol rockets, levitating objects, baking bread using ice-cream through to creating fire vortices using a dustbin and a turntable, the audience will be elevated to another level of thinking. The experience through audience participation, visuals, motion, humour, music and dance will leave everyone wanting more. This is a life-changing, mind-blowing and jaw-dropping experience.

Alex’s greatest fascination is traditional skills of animal tracking. He has dedicated much of his life to learning the ancient skill, eventually qualifying as one of a handful of tracker assessors in 2004 – the youngest ever to achieve this feat. During the last decade, Alex’s commitment to tracking has afforded him the opportunity to track jaguars in the Amazon jungle, bears in California, grizzlies and wolves in Montana and the famous black-mane lions of the Kalahari. All of these adventures are experienced with his long-time friend and mentor, Renias Mhlongo. Alex van den Heever is the founder of Nhlayisa Power Supply, a company which develops fortified foods for rural markets and bulk feeding. His dream to establish a tracking school started when he was paired with Renias Mhlongo as his tracker at Londolozi. In 2010, Alex van den Heever with encouragement and support of Mrs Gaynor Rupert founded the Tracker Academy – the first school of its kind in Africa. Tracker Academy stands as a training division of SA College for Tourism which operates under the auspices of the Peace Parks Foundation. In addition to his conservation work, Alex has worked as a facilitator for Vulindlela Transformational Services conducting diversity training. Here he led courses aimed at facilitating a better understanding between black and white people working in corporate South Africa. Relationships & Team Work in the Workplace With humour, sensitivity and humility, Alex and Renias demolish the walls that isolate each one of us. They tell their story of a path to profound mutual understanding. Their story is a tale of contrasts: white and black; man, and boy; apartheid and unity; third world and first world. Alex uses the real-life story of his life as a game ranger at Londolozi Private Game Reserve and his relationship with tracker Renias Mhlongo to convey transformational wisdom and insights. Alex van den Heever will demonstrate how to break down cultural barriers utterly in the work place and foster generosity of spirit among people. It is not a methodology they offer but rather an ability to inspire the audience and open their minds to their potential as individuals and as a team.
Rusty Labuschagne - Freedom Warrior
Rusty Labuschagne is a unique premier speaker on the professional circuit. One is immediately struck by his sincerity and humility as he delivers a dramatic account of his transformational experience. Rusty has been through a trauma few have experienced. In 2003, the successful Zimbabwean businessman, who ran a safari outfit, flew his own aircraft, and had a fishing resort on Lake Kariba, was framed by a poacher, the police, and the courts, and wrongfully convicted of drowning a poacher. He talks and writes about being subjected to conditions most people would find unbearable, having to draw on his inner resources and strengths to endure the unimaginable. In the process, he developed not only a life-saving resilience but also empathy and a keen desire to help his fellow inmates. His faith in God, positive mental attitude, leadership qualities, and lessons in forgiveness, gratitude, and humility bring a personal, transformative, and authentic message of hope and freedom. In his book and to audiences, Rusty's message is that everyone is faced with challenges, but it is who you are and the depth of your determination that will get you through life's darkest moments. He shows how one can harness one's inner strength and let go of what one cannot control. His talks have a broad audience appeal, from leadership lessons for CEOs and managers to inspiration and staff members' motivation. They will all feel an impact. VICTORY OVER INJUSTICE Against police evidence, without a body and on presumptions, Rusty was convicted of drowning a fish poacher during Mugabe's rule. He served 10 years in Zimbabwe's prisons, including the notorious Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, where he suffered through the Zim dollar crash, with food shortages, no running water, and people dying around him daily. He speaks eloquently about being subjected to conditions most people would find unendurable, having to dig deep within himself to find solutions to an unbearable situation. His resilience, ability to face adversity, and pure grit are an unparalleled inspiration. KEYNOTES: Beating Chains

Resilience Learned: Bounce back with experience and grit. Sara-Jayne King is a mixed-race South African/British journalist and radio presenter whose career has taken her across the globe in search of remarkable stories and fascinating characters. Her career began as a junior journalist in local radio in London and since then has included roles in the Middle East and Africa, most recently as a senior editor for news channel eNCA and presenter for Primedia’s talk radio station Cape Talk. Born Karoline King in 1980 in Johannesburg South Africa, Sara-Jayne (as she will later be called by her adoptive parents) is the result of an affair, illegal under apartheid’s Immorality Act, between a white British woman and a black South African man. Her story reveals the shocking lie created to cover up the forbidden relationship and the hurried overseas adoption of the illegitimate baby, born during one of history’s most inhumane and destructive regimes. Killing Karoline follows the journey of the baby girl who is raised in a leafy, middle-class corner of the South of England by a white couple. Plagued by questions surrounding her own identity and unable to ‘fit in’ Sara-Jayne begins to turn on herself. She eventually returns to South Africa, after 26 years, to face her demons. There she is forced to face issues of identity, race, rejection and belonging beyond that which she could ever have imagined. She must also face her birth family, who in turn must confront what happens when the baby you kill off at a mere six weeks old returns from the dead. Sarah-Jayne is passionate about issues relating to identity, race, adoption, mental health and addiction and addresses all of those factors in her talks.
